Most of us would like to believe that we are basically good people. We try to treat others fairly, care about our families, work hard, and make responsible choices. We may make mistakes, but we often tell ourselves that nobody is perfect.
Christianity agrees that nobody is perfect—but it also says that our imperfections matter more than we might realize.
The Bible teaches that God is perfectly good, loving, and holy. It also teaches that every human being falls short of His standard. We sometimes lie, act selfishly, lose our temper, hold grudges, ignore people in need, or make choices we know are wrong. The Bible calls this sin.
Sin is not simply a list of bad things people do. It reflects a deeper problem in the human heart. We often want to live life on our own terms rather than God’s. According to Christianity, sin creates a separation between us and the God who created us.
That is why we need grace.
We cannot repair that separation simply by trying harder. Good deeds are valuable, but they cannot erase everything we have done wrong. Being generous today does not undo yesterday’s dishonesty. Going to church does not make a person perfect. Even our best efforts cannot make us completely righteous before a holy God.
The good news of Christianity is that God does not wait for us to become perfect before reaching out to us.
Instead, He offers grace.
God’s grace means that He offers forgiveness and reconciliation as a gift. Christians believe that Jesus Christ came into the world to make this possible. Through His death on the cross, Jesus took upon Himself the consequences of sin. Through His resurrection, He opened the way to new life and a restored relationship with God.
We need grace because we cannot save ourselves.
This can be difficult to accept. We are used to earning what we receive. But grace asks us to admit that we need something only God can provide.
Grace does not mean our choices no longer matter. Rather, grace gives us a new beginning. Instead of trying to become good enough to earn God’s acceptance, we can receive His forgiveness and allow Him to begin changing us from the inside out.
You do not have to have everything figured out before turning toward God. You do not need a perfect past or a perfect life.
You need grace.
And according to the Bible, God is ready to give it.
