Grace is one of the most important ideas in Christianity, but it can sometimes sound like a religious word that is hard to understand. At its heart, God’s grace is His undeserved love, kindness, and favor toward us. It is God giving us something good that we could never earn on our own.
Most of life teaches us that we have to earn what we receive. We work to earn a paycheck. We study to earn a good grade. We try to earn the respect of others. Because of this, we may assume that God works the same way. We may think we have to become good enough before God will accept us.
The Christian message says something very different.
The Bible teaches that every person falls short of God’s perfect standard. We make mistakes. We hurt people. We make selfish choices. We sometimes know what is right and still choose another path. Christianity calls this problem sin, and it separates us from God.
But God did not simply leave us there.
The Bible says that God loves us so deeply that He sent Jesus Christ to bring us back to Him. Jesus lived the life we could not live and gave His life on the cross for our sins. He then rose from the dead. Through Jesus, God offers forgiveness and a restored relationship with Him.
That is grace.
Grace means you do not have to clean up your entire life before coming to God. You do not have to prove that you deserve His love. In fact, grace begins with recognizing that none of us can earn our way to God.
The Bible puts it this way: “For by grace you have been saved through faith.” Salvation is described as God’s gift, not something we achieve by being religious or doing enough good deeds.
This does not mean that how we live is unimportant. Grace changes the reason we seek to live differently. Christians do not obey God in order to purchase His love. They seek to follow Him because they have received His love.
Imagine owing a debt you could never repay and discovering that someone has paid it completely for you. You did not earn the payment. You simply receive the gift.
God’s grace is like that.
Christianity begins not with what you can do for God, but with what God has done for you. Grace is His invitation to receive forgiveness, begin again, and discover a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.
