Why Can’t We Earn God’s Favor?

Most of us understand the idea of earning something. We work to earn money. We study to earn good grades. We try to earn trust by keeping our promises. So it can seem natural to think that our relationship with God works the same way.

Maybe if we do enough good things, God will accept us. Maybe if our good choices outweigh our bad ones, everything will be fine.

Christianity offers a different picture.

The Bible teaches that God is perfectly holy and good. His standard is not simply being better than the people around us. It is perfect goodness. And when we look honestly at our lives, none of us meets that standard.

We have all done things we regret. We have spoken words we wish we could take back. We have acted selfishly, ignored what we knew was right, or failed to love others as we should. The Bible calls this sin and says that everyone is affected by it.

This is why we cannot earn God’s favor.

Suppose you decided that from today forward you would always do the right thing. Even if you succeeded, which none of us completely does, your future good behavior would not erase everything that came before it.

Good deeds are important, but they cannot purchase forgiveness.

This may sound discouraging at first, but it is actually at the heart of Christianity’s message of hope. If acceptance by God depended on our performance, we could never know whether we had done enough. How many good deeds would be required? How many failures would be too many?

Grace removes that uncertainty.

The Bible teaches that God offers salvation as a gift through Jesus Christ. Jesus did for us what we could not do for ourselves. Through His death and resurrection, He opened the way for us to be forgiven and brought into a relationship with God.

This does not mean God is unconcerned about how we live. Christianity places great importance on love, honesty, generosity, forgiveness, and obedience to God. But these things are meant to flow from our relationship with God rather than become the price we pay to obtain it.

There is a major difference between trying to earn God’s love and living differently because you know you are loved.

Grace invites us to stop trying to prove ourselves worthy and instead trust what God has done for us through Christ.

You cannot earn God’s grace because grace, by definition, is a gift.

And the good news is that you do not have to earn it.
