Do I Have to Clean Up My Life Before Coming to God?

Many people hesitate to approach God because they believe they need to get their lives together first.

Maybe you think, “I need to stop making these mistakes before God will accept me.” Perhaps you feel that you should become a better person, break certain habits, understand the Bible, or start attending church before you can seriously consider a relationship with God.

Christianity offers a different invitation:

Come to God as you are.

Jesus did not spend His time only with people who appeared religious or respectable. The Gospels describe Him welcoming people with complicated lives, questionable reputations, and painful pasts. Some had made serious mistakes. Others were rejected by society.

Jesus welcomed them.

That does not mean He told people that their choices did not matter. Jesus called people to repentance—to turn away from sin and toward God. But He did not demand that they completely transform themselves before approaching Him.

The relationship came first. Transformation followed.

Think about someone who is sick. It would make little sense to say, “I need to become healthy before I see the doctor.” You go to the doctor because you need help becoming healthy.

In a similar way, Christianity does not say, “Fix yourself, and then come to God.”

It says, “Come to God because you cannot completely fix yourself.”

This is the heart of grace.

The Bible teaches that Jesus came for people who need forgiveness. His death on the cross made forgiveness possible, and His resurrection offers the hope of new life. We do not earn that gift by improving ourselves first.

We receive it through faith.

Of course, following Jesus can lead to real changes. You may begin recognizing attitudes, behaviors, relationships, or habits that need to change. Sometimes those changes happen quickly. Others may take years of growth, prayer, wisdom, and perseverance.

But those changes are the result of God working in your life, not an entrance requirement for approaching Him.

Perhaps there are parts of your life you are ashamed of. Maybe you wonder what God would think if He knew everything about you.

According to Christianity, He already does.

You do not have to hide anything from Him. You can come honestly—with your doubts, questions, failures, fears, and regrets.

God’s grace meets us where we are and begins leading us toward where He wants us to be.

So do you need to clean up your life before coming to God?

No.

Come to Him first.

Then allow His grace to begin changing your life from the inside out.
